Flag poles have a pretty obvious purpose, they hold a flag. They are a symbol of national pride, corporate and civic spirit and are a positive image in our communities. Flagpoles help create drama and provide the perfect platform from which to display corporate and promotional flags. They are available in steel or aluminum and come in various heights and styles. I kind of think of the American flag on a tall shiny pole to be the finishing touch to a beautiful home expressing its pride.

My grandparents have a beautiful farm in the midwest with perfectly manicured lawns and neat as a pin house. They recently received a new flag pole as a gift from their children. It stands over 20 feet tall and proudly displays the American Flag. Now, my grandparents would have this up anyway, but theirs is even more meaningful as one of their grandsons is currently serving in the Iraq war. It is their way of paying tribute to his efforts and those of his unit. They have other smaller flag poles on their house, but that one stands tallest and proudest.

They come in two main catagories; residential and commercial. Residential poles are considered to be lighter use and are often not as "industrial grade" as the commercial versions. They are sometimes shorter as well. You can get a do it yourself flag pole kit to make it easy on yourself, or get one of the really neat telescoping flag poles that have no ropes to tangle and raise and lower quickly and easily.

Flagpoles may also be purchased in a set complete with hardware and flag. Vertical wall mounted aluminum flagpoles allow flags to be flown from buildings where conditions do not allow, or do not favor, the use of free-standing flagpoles. A variety of standard mounting brackets are available for flag poles up to 28' in length' special flagpole brackets can be designed for longer shafts when required. Where conditions require flying wall-mounted flags well below the roofline of the building, outrigger wall mount aluminum flagpoles provide an elegant answer.

Want your flag to be seen better at night? Believe it or not there are flag pole lighting kits available. These are often easy to install and provide a wonderful accent to your decorative flag.

In terms of maintenance, all that is generally necessary with fiberglass flag poles is an occasional wash down with soap and water. Most poles do not require much for maintenance, you'll want to be sure your metal poles are not rusting. Typically the pole comes pretreated and/or made of a material that is rust resistant.
