Telescoping Flag Poles
Information current as of
Telescoping
poles are pretty handy, they are made from varying size tubes (made
of aluminum) that skip inside each other (bigger on the bottom) and
allow the pole to be raised or lowered for easy access. They are
convenient, clean looking and simple to operate.
Since they shrink down to just a few feet there is no need for
the ropes and halyard system that traditional flag poles have.
Thus there is nothing to tangle up with the flag itself. Once the
flag is in place you simply elevate the pole to its desired height
(usually 20 feet), lock it in place and be on your way. When you're
ready to take down the flag at night you simply lower the pole and
carefully remove the flag (it is common knowledge that the American
Flag is not to touch the ground at any point).
The pole's diameter is its strongest indicator of overall pole
strength, meaning the bigger the pole, the stronger it is. Of
course you want it to be made of a strong durable material that is
thick enough, but wall thickness isn't as important as overall
diameter.
Every manufacturer has their own patented locking system to keep
the pole up without falling. You'd prefer to get one that is
self-indexing and self-locking. So when each section is raised it
automatically locks in place. The locking system should be a
positive locking system, and not friction or expansion based.
Obviously you'd want a system with as few moving parts as possible
to prevent the risk of the flag falling down to its smallest
height.
Flag poles over 20 feet can have varying weights from twelve to
twenty pounds.
